Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. Queen Latifah's work in television and music has resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. an officer in the police force. Her parents divorced around the age of 10 years old. Latifah lived within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and compassionate in Arabic was bestowed to her her cousin at the age of she was only eight. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. She performed the hit song"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah was a beatboxer in her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. The song got the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her first track Wrath of My Madness.
